The opening is only part of a fragrance. Bright notes can soften, woods can become warmer, and a sweetness you barely noticed can come forward. Wearing a scent for a day gives you more to go on than the first spray.
Try one fragrance at a time on a day when you can notice it. A paper strip is useful for an introduction; a wear on skin helps you decide how it fits into your day. Start with a light application and revisit it as it settles.
Notice it once near the beginning, again after an hour or so, and later in the day. There is no need to name every note. Pay attention to the texture, the balance of freshness and warmth, and whether you enjoy catching it as you move.
Return to it on another day before deciding. A quiet evening and a busy afternoon may give you different impressions. You might find that a fragrance suits one part of your life particularly well.
A small decant gives you that room. Choose a few scents that interest you, wear them in turn, and see which one you want to come back to.
