Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Where to Start: Baccarat Rouge 540 and More

Baccarat Rouge 540, Grand Soir, Oud Satin Mood, Aqua Universalis, À la Rose, 724 and Gentle Fluidity: the stories, how each wears, US prices.

Francis Kurkdjian was 26 when he made Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier in 1995, and it became one of the best-selling men's fragrances in the world. In 2009 he founded his own house in Paris with Marc Chaya, then a partner at Ernst & Young. LVMH bought a majority stake in 2017, Dior made Kurkdjian its perfume creative director in 2021, and Chaya told the Moodie Davitt Report in 2024 that the United States brings in about half the house's sales. The short answer: start with Baccarat Rouge 540 if you want the one everyone knows, Grand Soir for warm amber, Oud Satin Mood for rose and vanilla over a soft oud, Aqua Universalis for clean citrus, À la Rose for a fresh rose, 724 for white flowers and musk, and Gentle Fluidity for juniper and vanilla.

A perfumer's own house

Kurkdjian was born in Paris in 1969 to Armenian parents and trained at ISIPCA, the perfumery school in Versailles, from 1990 to 1993. Versailles stayed in his work. In 2006 he re-created Marie Antoinette's favorite perfume for the palace, and in 2007 and 2008 he filled its gardens with scented soap bubbles. He opened a bespoke perfume atelier in 2001, years before the house.

Chaya runs the business; Kurkdjian composes, and Fragrantica credits him with every fragrance below. Its growth came slowly and mostly in American department stores. Chaya told Moodie Davitt the house sold only through Neiman Marcus in the US for seven years, and said: "It took us about ten years to become market leaders in the US." Most of the fragrances below come in 35 ml, 70 ml and 200 ml bottles, and every price here is from the house's US site.

Baccarat Rouge 540: the one everyone knows

In 2013 the crystal maker Baccarat asked Kurkdjian for a perfume for its 250th anniversary, and in 2014 only 250 red bottles were made. Kelly St. John, then vice president of beauty at Neiman Marcus, told him she would sell it if he made more. The house released it in 2015, and Dazed reports it was the most viewed fragrance on TikTok in 2023.

The house builds it from jasmine and saffron, an ambergris accord with dry woods, and a burnt-sugar note. On skin it is sweet, a little salty and very airy, and it carries a long way. It leans heavily on Ambroxan, which some noses stop registering within minutes, so many wearers smell little on themselves while others smell plenty. The Extrait (2017) is a reworked formula with bitter almond and more warmth; our guide to Baccarat Rouge 540 compares the two and covers what else shares its character.

Choose it if you want the house's signature and do not mind smelling like a fragrance many people recognize. The Eau de Parfum sells at $230 for 35 ml, $360 for 70 ml and $715 for 200 ml; the Extrait at $320, $495 and $985.

Grand Soir: the amber

Grand Soir came out in 2016 with Petit Matin as a pair about Paris from dawn to night. The house describes them as the freshness of an early morning and the radiance of an endless night in the city, and that summer Now Smell This posted the film in which Kurkdjian walks around Paris for the two. Çafleurebon's Michelyn Camen called Grand Soir "the embodiment of a gala evening in Paris."

The house names cistus labdanum, lavandin and cinnamon leaf over an amber and vanilla accord with benzoin; Fragrantica adds orange, tonka, musk and cedar. It smells of warm, resinous amber with a dry herbal edge from the lavandin and a soft vanilla underneath. It is denser and darker than Baccarat Rouge 540, with no saffron and none of its glassy lift, and it suits cool weather and evenings.

Choose Grand Soir if you like amber fragrances and want one that stays smooth rather than smoky. It sells at $180 for 35 ml, $275 for 70 ml and $535 for 200 ml. Petit Matin, its morning half, is citrus and musk, also from $180 for 35 ml.

Oud Satin Mood: rose and vanilla over oud

The house's Oud Mood collection treats oud as fabric, each fragrance named for a cloth. Oud Satin Mood joined Oud Silk Mood, Oud Cashmere Mood and Oud Velvet Mood in the spring of 2015; The Candy Perfume Boy titled his review that April "The Ruby Oud." The house calls it a free interpretation of oud, made to be worn on the skin like a rich fabric.

Violet and two roses, Damascena essence and absolute, lead over a vanilla and amber accord, with oud underneath; Fragrantica's list adds strawberry, benzoin and caramel. It opens jammy and rosy, then turns plush and sweet as the vanilla comes up, with the oud as a quiet, smoky backdrop more than a centerpiece. The Candy Perfume Boy found the rose fading into the background as the woods and vanilla took over.

Choose it if you want your first oud to be sweet and floral, or if you like rose but find most rose perfumes too fresh. The Eau de Parfum sells at $220 for 35 ml, $340 for 70 ml and $665 for 200 ml; the Extrait de Parfum at $310 for 35 ml and $475 for 70 ml.

Aqua Universalis: the clean one

Aqua Universalis came out in 2009, the house's first year, and it began as an idea about cleanliness more than a perfume alone. Fragrantica records that it launched with a laundry detergent and fabric softener in the same scent. The house still describes it as a fragrance for anyone, anywhere.

Its notes are bergamot, Sicilian lemon, lily of the valley and sweet orange over light, musky blond woods. The Candy Perfume Boy, reviewing it in 2012, compared the opening to lemons squeezed over ice, then a green lily of the valley and soft laundry musks. It smells of clean shirts and citrus, sheer and close, and it is the easiest fragrance here to wear in summer or at work.

Choose it if you want something fresh that nobody will mind. It is an Eau de Toilette, so expect it to wear lightly. It sells at $170 for 35 ml, $265 for 70 ml and $515 for 200 ml. Aqua Universalis Cologne Forte (2011) is the stronger Eau de Parfum version, at $275 for 70 ml.

À la Rose: the fresh rose

À la Rose (2014) goes back to Versailles. Jessica of Now Smell This reported that it was inspired by Marie Antoinette's love of roses and by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun's 1783 portrait of the queen holding one, Marie-Antoinette à la Rose. The house says each bottle holds 250 Centifolia roses from Grasse, with an essence of 150 Damascena roses in the top notes.

The rose comes with pear, lychee and bergamot, then violet and sweet pea, over musk and cedar. Jessica found it a sheer, well-made rose, "very pretty, very fresh and bright", and surprisingly long-lasting. It smells of a pink rose just picked, with fruit and no powder, and suits daytime and spring.

Choose À la Rose if you want a rose that reads as fresh flowers rather than vintage perfume. Next to Oud Satin Mood it is lighter and greener, with no vanilla or oud. It sells at $180 for 35 ml, $275 for 70 ml and $535 for 200 ml. L'Eau à la Rose is the lighter Eau de Toilette, and L'Homme à la Rose a version for men.

724: white flowers and musk

724 is one of the house's newer fragrances, in stores from September 2022. Kurkdjian told V Magazine the name stands for "24 hours of scented living, seven days a week." The house describes it as a pure sky rising over a city, shaped by urban landscapes and their architecture.

It opens with bergamot and aldehydes, which give a clean, slightly metallic fizz, then jasmine grandiflorum, sweet pea and mock orange, over sandalwood and white musk. In wear it is airy and bright, like fresh laundry with white flowers, and it settles into a soft musk close to the skin.

Choose 724 if you like clean fragrances but want more flowers than Aqua Universalis gives. It is the house's easiest office fragrance after Aqua Universalis. It sells at $180 for 35 ml, $275 for 70 ml and $535 for 200 ml.

Gentle Fluidity: one formula, two fragrances

Gentle Fluidity, from 2019, is a puzzle Kurkdjian set himself: two Eaux de Parfum, Gold and Silver, made from the same ingredients. The house lists juniper berries, nutmeg, coriander, musks, amber woods and vanilla, and says the pair challenges the barriers between masculine and feminine. Only the doses differ.

In Silver, the house says, nutmeg and amber woods lead and the juniper gives an ultra-fresh, aromatic lift it likens to a gin frappé. Gold has more coriander, musk and vanilla, so it is warmer, sweeter and more enveloping. Silver suits people who like fresh, spicy fragrances; Gold suits people who would otherwise reach for Grand Soir or Baccarat Rouge 540 but want something softer.

Try both side by side if you can, since the comparison is the point. Gold sells at $180 for 35 ml, $275 for 70 ml and $535 for 200 ml.

How to choose

Start with what you already wear. If you like sweet, airy ambers, Baccarat Rouge 540; if you want amber that is warmer and smoother, Grand Soir or Gentle Fluidity Gold. If you want rose, À la Rose for daytime and Oud Satin Mood for evenings. If you want fresh and clean, Aqua Universalis, then 724 for more flowers, or Gentle Fluidity Silver for spice.

These bottles cost $265 to $360 for 70 ml, and Baccarat Rouge 540 in particular wears differently on different people because of its Ambroxan. Wear your first choice for a few days before you buy, and ask someone near you how it smells.
