The composition

Tommy opens with a cool rush of spearmint, grapefruit and bergamot, with lavender close behind. Crisp green apple and a tart hint of cranberry follow, bright and a little sweet, before it settles into a soft, clean base of cotton flower and amber.

It is the late '90s in a spray: easygoing, freshly laundered and cheerful. A natural pick for warm days, and for anyone ready to revisit a first bottle.

How it wears

Tommy is a warm-weather, daytime scent, and Fragrantica voters agree, putting summer and spring far ahead of the colder months. The spearmint and grapefruit are brightest early; after that the apple and cranberry soften into a clean, cotton-like base that suits weekends, errands and casual offices. Parfumo voters rate its longevity and sillage as moderate, so it stays friendly rather than loud.

Compared with

Tommy GirlTommy Hilfiger
The 1996 companion scent, composed by Calice Becker according to Fragrantica. Tommy Girl is a floral fruity built on apple blossom, camellia, blackcurrant and honeysuckle; Tommy keeps its fruit behind mint, lavender and a clean cotton base.
Cool WaterDavidoff
Both open on mint and lavender. Cool Water turns salty and aquatic over oakmoss and amber, while Tommy goes fruity with green apple and cranberry and finishes softer, closer to clean laundry.
FierceAbercrombie & Fitch
The 2000s mall classic to Tommy's '90s one. Fierce is woodier and muskier, with fir, citrus and sandalwood; Tommy is lighter and fruitier, with spearmint and apple in front.

Questions about Tommy

When did Tommy cologne come out?

Tommy launched in 1995 through the Aramis division of Estée Lauder. The Fragrance Foundation named it the star men's fragrance of 1995, and it also won awards for its packaging and its television and print advertising, The Baltimore Sun reported.

What does Tommy cologne smell like?

Tommy smells of cool spearmint, grapefruit and lavender, then crisp green apple and cranberry over a soft cotton and amber base. Its original note list, as The Perfume Society records it, reads like an American road trip: Florida grapefruit, Midwestern spearmint, Cape Cod cranberry, Atlantic driftwood and a hint of Dutch apple pie.

Who created Tommy cologne?

Tommy Hilfiger does not credit a perfumer for Tommy. Fragrantica and Parfumo name Annie Buzantian and Alberto Morillas. The Estée Lauder Companies, which launched it in 1995, markets the fragrance.
