The composition
Santal 33 opens dry and bright, cardamom and violet with iris crackling underneath. Then the woods take over: Australian sandalwood and cedar, smooth and faintly smoky, threaded with soft leather and a clean musk that keeps it from ever turning sweet.
Few fragrances are as easy to recognize, and it sits comfortably on anyone, by day or at night. A natural pick if you like your woods dry rather than creamy, or want one bottle that carries through the whole year.
What wearers say
- Most praise a dry, smooth sandalwood with leather and cedar, often likened to a furniture shop, a library or new leather goods.
- The best-known complaint is the opening: a large share smell dill, pickle or cucumber, while many others never notice it.
- Wearers call it strongly skin dependent; some find it harsh, synthetic or rubbery, and some are tired of meeting it everywhere.
- Longevity and projection are mostly reported as long and strong, though a few find it fades quickly on them.
- Worn through the year, most often in fall and spring, by day and into the evening.
Summarized by Cabinet Noir from public reviews on Fragrantica, Parfumo and Basenotes, checked 23 October 2026.
Compared with
- Ink MarkLouis Vuitton
- Ink Mark is a creamy sandalwood with white incense that stays warmer and softer. Santal 33 is drier and more leathery, with cardamom and violet at the opening and cedar beside the sandalwood.
- WonderwoodComme des Garçons
- Wonderwood stacks cedar, guaiac and vetiver with pepper and no leather. Santal 33 shares its dry woods but adds violet, cardamom and a soft leather, and wears smoother and more polished.

Questions about Santal 33
Why do some people smell pickles in Santal 33?
Many wearers describe a green, dill or cucumber note in the opening of Santal 33, and many others never notice it. Reviews tie it to skin and to the first minutes; most who notice it say the sandalwood and leather that follow smell quite different.
Who makes Santal 33, and who is the perfumer?
Santal 33 is by Le Labo, the New York house founded in 2006 and part of Estée Lauder Companies since 2014. Le Labo credits no perfumer on its own page; Fragrantica and Parfumo name Frank Voelkl.
Is Le Labo Santal 33 unisex?
Le Labo sells Santal 33 to everyone, and Fragrantica lists it for women and men. Reviewers split on whether it leans masculine, mostly because of its leather, but it is worn widely by both.
What concentration is Santal 33?
Santal 33 is an Eau de Parfum. Le Labo also makes Santal 33 as a liquid balm and in body products such as lotion and soap, which are separate from the spray.
Is Santal 33 discontinued?
No. Le Labo still makes Santal 33; it was on sale new as of October 2026.
