In 2014 the crystal maker Baccarat released Baccarat Rouge 540 in a run of 250 crystal bottles, and Now Smell This put the price at 3,000 euros. Francis Kurkdjian's own house released it in 2015 in its plain glass bottle, and in February 2016 Now Smell This listed it at $300 for 70 ml. The house charges $360 for that bottle today, and Dazed reports it was the most viewed fragrance on TikTok in 2023. The short answer: it is worth it if you smell it clearly on your own skin and want one fragrance that carries far and lasts. It is a poor blind buy, because some people barely smell it, and on the gray market a 70 ml can cost more than the house's own price.
What it smells like
Kurkdjian made it for Baccarat's 250th anniversary. He told Le Parfum Magazine that 540 is the temperature, in degrees Celsius, at which gold powder is fused to make Baccarat's red crystal.
The house builds it in three parts: jasmine and saffron, an ambergris accord with dry woods, and ethyl maltol, the burnt-sugar note. On skin it is sweet, airy and a little salty, like spun sugar near a fire, with a woody, mineral line underneath. Fragrantica's Sergey Borisov wrote in 2018 that the saffron gives it an iodine edge and the fir balsam hints of pine and jam. Angela of Now Smell This compared the opening to a blood orange hard candy.
How it wears, and the catch
It projects and it lasts. Victoria of Bois de Jasmin found both its projection and its longevity huge when she reviewed it in August 2025.
The catch is Ambroxan, the ambergris-like material that carries most of the base. In a second piece that month she wrote that up to 20% of people are blind to certain musks, ambers or woods, and that olfactory fatigue makes many wearers stop noticing it on themselves. So it is common to spray it, smell little, and then hear about it from someone across the room. That is why a test on your own skin matters more here than with most fragrances: if you cannot smell it on yourself, a bottle buys a scent only other people enjoy.
What the house charges
Maison Francis Kurkdjian sells the Eau de Parfum at $230 for 35 ml, $360 for 70 ml and $715 for 200 ml, and a travel set of three 11 ml sprays at $230, on its US site on 29 October 2026. Per milliliter the 200 ml costs least, about $3.58, against $5.14 for the 70 ml and $6.57 for the 35 ml. The travel set costs the most per milliliter, about $7, and buys portability rather than value.
Against its own past the price has moved slowly: from $300 for 70 ml in 2016 to $360 now, a rise of 20% in about ten years. Within the house it sits near the top. On 19 October 2026 Grand Soir and À la Rose cost $275 for 70 ml and Oud Satin Mood $340.

What it costs outside the house
New bottles also sell on the gray market, at stores outside the house's own shops and authorized retailers, and collectors sell to each other. As of 29 October 2026, the 35 ml Eau de Parfum runs $180 to $200 on the gray market, 13% to 22% under the house price, and the 200 ml $470 to $550, 23% to 34% under.
The 70 ml is the odd one. It starts at $279, 23% under, but its typical gray market price is about $426, above the house's $360. Personal sales run $115 to $200 for the 70 ml and $355 to $403 for the 200 ml, 44% to 50% under; ask how full a bottle is and where it was bought. For this fragrance the house price is not the ceiling, so check today's prices before you pay more than $360 for a 70 ml anywhere.

Eau de Parfum or Extrait
The Extrait (2017) is a separate formula, not a stronger dose of the same one. The house adds bitter almond, a jasmine grandiflorum heart and Cashmeran, and Borisov found the burnt sugar much more pronounced. It wears richer and warmer, a little nutty, with less of the airy lift. Fragrantica readers rate it higher, 4.20 against 3.75 for the Eau de Parfum on 1 October 2026.
The house sells the Extrait at $320 for 35 ml, $495 for 70 ml and $985 for 200 ml, 38% more than the Eau de Parfum at 70 ml. On the gray market the 70 ml runs $354 to $400, 19% to 28% under, and the 200 ml $600 to $800, 19% to 39% under; the 35 ml sits at about the house price. Personal sales of the 70 ml run $220 to $290.

So is it worth it
It is worth the money if three things hold: you smell it clearly on your own skin after a few hours, you like a fragrance that people notice, and you will wear a 70 ml before you tire of it. It is a weaker buy if you smell it only faintly, if you work close to other people, or if you would rather not wear a fragrance strangers recognize.
Try it before the bottle. Wear a decant for a few days, ask someone near you what they smell, and only then choose between the Eau de Parfum and the Extrait. If you buy, the 200 ml costs the least per milliliter both at the house and outside it. Questions
Is Baccarat Rouge 540 worth it?
Baccarat Rouge 540 is worth its price if you can smell it on your own skin and want a sweet, airy amber that projects and lasts. Some people barely register its Ambroxan, so try a decant first. Maison Francis Kurkdjian sells the Eau de Parfum at $360 for 70 ml (29 October 2026).
Why is Baccarat Rouge 540 so expensive?
Maison Francis Kurkdjian sets the price and does not publish its costs. The 70 ml Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum cost $300 in 2016 and $360 in October 2026. Demand keeps outside prices high too: on 29 October 2026 the typical gray market 70 ml sat above the house price.
Is Baccarat Rouge 540 long lasting?
For most wearers, yes. Bois de Jasmin found the projection and longevity of Baccarat Rouge 540 huge. Many people stop smelling it on themselves after a while, because of olfactory fatigue and its Ambroxan, while people around them still notice it. Start with two sprays.
Is Baccarat Rouge 540 for men or women?
Both. Maison Francis Kurkdjian lists Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum and Extrait among its unisex fragrances. Its jasmine, saffron, ambergris and burnt sugar wear the same way on anyone; the Extrait adds bitter almond and more warmth.
What is the difference between Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum and Extrait?
The Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait (2017) is a separate formula with bitter almond, a jasmine grandiflorum heart and Cashmeran, so it wears richer and warmer than the airy Eau de Parfum. It costs $495 for 70 ml at Maison Francis Kurkdjian against $360 for the Eau de Parfum (29 October 2026).
