The composition
Earthy patchouli is the center of Coromandel. Vanilla and benzoin soften its edges, building a rich amber warmth threaded with incense. As the fragrance settles, the texture becomes smooth and velvety while the patchouli keeps its depth.
This is a fragrance to spend an evening with. The pleasure comes slowly, as the resinous sweetness gathers around the darker notes. A compelling place to begin if you love amber with an earthy, incense-lit character.
How it wears
Coromandel suits autumn and winter, dinners and quiet evenings at home. Parfumo reviewers describe it moving from a bright, slightly soapy citrus start to warm amber, then to a creamy white chocolate and patchouli that stays for a long time. Parfumo voters rate its longevity above its sillage, so after the first hour it keeps close rather than filling a room.
Compared with
- Coromandel Extrait de ParfumChanel
- The Extrait, released in 2019. Chanel builds it on the same patchouli, vanilla and benzoin and adds the smoky, leathery facets of labdanum; Kafkaesque notes more musk and a clearer frankincense.
- Borneo 1834Serge Lutens
- Christopher Sheldrake worked on both, and both pair patchouli with cocoa. Borneo 1834 is darker and drier, built on bitter cocoa and earthy patchouli; Coromandel leans toward incense, white chocolate and powdery vanilla.
- ComèteChanel
- A newer entry in Les Exclusifs de Chanel, built on cherry blossom, iris and heliotrope over white musk. Comète is light and powdery; Coromandel is the deeper, resinous one, with patchouli and incense at its center.

Questions about Coromandel
Is Coromandel Eau de Parfum the same as the original Coromandel?
Chanel first released Coromandel in 2007 as an Eau de Toilette in Les Exclusifs de Chanel. That Eau de Toilette is no longer made, and the Eau de Parfum, released in 2016, took its place. Parfumo lists the two as concentration variants of the same fragrance.
What does Coromandel smell like?
Coromandel is an amber fragrance built on earthy patchouli, vanilla and benzoin, with incense and a creamy white chocolate note in the base. Chanel named it after the Coromandel lacquer screens Gabrielle Chanel kept in her apartment on rue Cambon.
Where is the full bottle of Coromandel sold?
In the US, Chanel sells Coromandel, like the rest of Les Exclusifs de Chanel, on chanel.com, in Chanel boutiques and at select department stores. It comes as an Eau de Parfum and as an Extrait de Parfum.
